9/10/2018 2 Comments The Royal tenenbaums (2001)If there is a train wreck, do you watch or look away? I was faced with this question while watching The Royal Tenenbaums. The Tenenbaums are a family with three kids who reached success during early childhood then extreme failure in adulthood. You have Margot (the adoptive daughter) who is an excellent playwrite. Richie, the world-class tennis player. Then Chas, a math and business genius. All three move back into their mothers house after sixteen years for different reasons. Royal, the father, was excommunicate- for lack of better words- from the family while the kids were very young due to constant disappointment and stealing money from Chas. When he finds out that Etheline is about to marry another guy, he fakes a terminal illness to get back into his family's life. The rest of the movie deals with the dynamic and dysfunctionality of the Tenenbaums. I was more fascinated by the film than I loved it. I thought the way the film was shot was very appealing and had great transformations when there was an immediate plot twist or something important happened. I also thought that the film was fun but I grew tired of how dysfunctional the characters were during the middle. The film was truly a train wreck but I could not stop watching how all of the characters interacted and their outcome. From this, I would say that Wes Anderson, Owen Wilson, and all of the actors did a fantastic job by capturing exactly what they were aiming for.
