Tells the story of a struggling mother with two elementary aged kids, Sarah and Jonah, and one unplanned newborn, Mia. This New York house mom quickly grows exhausted with her son who gives off autistic symptoms, an insecure daughter, and newborn. Marlo, the mother, and Drew, the father, visit Marlo's rich brother who gifts them with a night nanny so Marlo can have some pressure taken off of her. Marlo calls Tully, the night nanny, and they become close over several nights and impulsively go get drinks in New York City. On the way home, Marlo falls asleep behind the wheel and crashes into a river. She envisions Marlo as a Mermaid saving her and wakes up in the hospital room. This is where Drew reveals to the psychiatrist that Marlo's maiden name is Tully.
This film had Lumieres vibes as Reitman directed the film to show real life motherhood. The viewer is taken on a journey through how exhausting three kids is and how hard it is to juggle life. I thought that the foreshadowing of the water scenes were very artistic and impactful. The script was hilarious and moving at the same time. At the beginning of the film, you sense that Marlo is a loving mother but there is something off about her life. I enjoyed the twist on the movie.
