Directed by Herbert Ross, Steel Magnolia tells the story of six women who live in a small town. The film starts with bride-to-be Shelby (Julia Roberts) getting ready for her wedding around Easter. Shelby is an intelligent, quick witted woman who is diabetic. The six women frequent in the same beauty parlor and have a relationship as strong as steel.
This “chick flick” made me laugh and cry within moments of each other. The screenwrite was so funny that I ended up pausing the movie just to laugh about the jokes. I thought it was very interesting how Ross made the final scene happen around Easter like how the beginning of the film started. My favorite scene was the funeral because M’Lynn (Sally Field) had an incredible monologue that was extremely powerful. The artistic vibe that some shots had were very fitting because it kept the viewer guessing about the end of the movie. I loved how different scenes prepare you for the tragedy that is about to come. The ending was weird because it was sad but made the viewer happy for the future.
